Meditation is a simple but life-transforming skill that can help you to relax, enhance understanding about yourself and develop your inherent potential. Meditation has great calming effects on your mind, body and spirit. It makes you more productive. The practice of meditation increases the blood flow in your brain.

It helps your mind to defragment your thoughts so you can make better sense of them, and step away from them to gain perspective.

If you are a beginner in this, then follow these steps to get the magical benefits of meditation:

Choose a peaceful environment-  Find a calm and serene place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit down relax and rest your hands on your lap. You can also sit cross legged on a cushion or chair or in whichever way you are comfortable.

Breathe slowly and deeply- Close your eyes. Start taking slow and deep breathes- inhale with your nose and exhale through your mouth. The initial intakes of air are likely to be shallow but as you allow more air to fill in your lungs you will be able to breathe deeply.

Be aware-  Focus your attention on your breathing. As you will breathe deeply you will feel more relaxed. Be mindful of each breathe that you take.

In the beginning you will find yourself getting distracted but don’t get disappointed. With regular practice you will achieve perfection.

Ending your Meditation-  When you are ready to end, open your eyes, stand up slowly and stretch yourself.

Tips for beginners

  • For beginners meditation CDs and DVDs are available, in which step by step instructions are given.
  • Aim to exhale for longer periods than inhalation.
  • Never go for meditation with an empty stomach otherwise you will feel distracted and uncomfortable.
  • Use a countdown timer built in your mobile phone or digital watch.
  • Some people find it easy to meditate with some light music whereas some prefer pin drop silence. Do as per your liking.
